IS MONICA STILL STANDING? OR TONI BRAXTON’s PULSE STILL RACING? ALBUM REVIEW by Dj Drapes
Its been a long time since these two Diva’s dropped an album, and they have both been released in the states on the same day, so great marketing…But are the albums any decent?…MMMMMMM!!!!
MONICA – Still Standing.
If there was any female singer that needed to come back it was Monica! This verteran of R’n'B has encountered a number of mishaps in her life. Failed albums back in 2003 & 2006, so it seemed there was no come back for Monica.
But after featuring on Keyshia Cole’s “Trust”single in 2009 (which she he was better than Keyshia on..yeah i said it!!) Her fans were left asking for another Monica album, and she didnt dissapoint. BET took on her Life documentary, also called “Still Standing”, which showed her life and the making of this album. The album is a very grown, very mature side of Monica to the one we remember back in th 90′s. Her first single, ‘Still Standing’ featuring Ludacris, is the stand out track for me on the album, but after that i was kinda left dissapointed. She inlisted the producing power of Brain Cox, Missy Elliot & Jamaine Dupri, and you would think that with that list you should have some heavywieght tracks, but it was still a major dissapointment. Beacuse of the success of the TV show you would think that her sound would be more commercial and younger, but instead she stayed true to her roots and kept it soulful which i think is a very bold move.

Ok….where do i start?
Toni braxton has always been like marmite (you love her or hate her), but she keeps coming back like a bad cold. In th 90′s she had hits like “Unbreak my heart” & “You’re Makin me High”, but again, like Monica, failed albums in 2001 and 2004, and as recent as 2008. After appearing on Dancing with the stars in 2008, Atlantic records took her on and she has been working on her seventh solo album “Pulse” ever since. A good album, very well produced, alot more up tempo than Monica’s. She has blended the old style with the new, trying to appeal to a younger market which she may have done. But i’m old skool and still love 90′s Toni B.
If you can think of what Rihanna would sound like in 10 years time…this maybe it! But i’ll give her this…she looks good for 43!

SO WHO’S ALBUMN IS BETTER?
Overall I would say Toni Braxton’s, it sounded more commercial and it was more up tempo. But due to the success of Monic’a reality show, she will sell more units. The fact is that R’n'B has got back two diva’s (Old Skool Diva’s) that music has been crying out for, they will always have fans and I’m still a fan of both. Now the year would be complete if Lauryn Hill made a come back…but we cant have it all!

Rudey says: well for me I’m gonna be honest . I was disappointed in both efforts, maybe I was expecting more than what I got bot both albums seem….WEAK. For two divas that have been through alot recently in their personal lives I was expecting some classic material especially having been away for so long. I agree with Drapes and the best tracks off each LP are listed above but again, as 2 collections of music they seemed to lack that ingredient that previously these two ladies put into the music at the heights of their correspnding careers. Seems like Monica’s effort is out because she has a TV show and that’s what’s gonna sell the album for her and Toni seems to poop this one out becasue she needs the money. These ladies can kill on the mic and are two of the most decorated individual still operating today from that era. They will always manage to draw in the best production talent but that doesnt guarantee you a hit album even with the likes of the great Bryan Cox. As a fan I’d go get theese two albums knowing that all the tracks on both albums aren’t killers . I wish the pair of them luck and we’ll see how things turn out .

Apparently, just before writing this article, I found out that the original UGG boot company are selling your masculinity away for only £150 and you can even get Steel toe-capped shit-head boots for a penny shy of £200. Fuck! Are you gonna gonna hear rappers spit their hottest about the frozen wrists, 300 thou swinginfor their necks,with the Bentley sitting on chrome 24′s while stepping in to club WITH UGG BOOTS ON?? NO! You’re not and if that becomes the norm I will stop listening to and playing HIPHOP past the year 1999 as a protest. I aint kidding.
If of course you wanna look like a complete fanny hole go ahead and look like Ben affleck then go ahead . He’s a tool too !! I’m all for progress in fashion and if you want to keep in touch with your feminine side hey go ahead I aint one to judge….until you slip on the DOUCHE-WEAR UNFORM of men’s ugg boots. Peeople will spit at you in the streets and maybe with a bit of luck they’ll burn you at the stake till all that is left are the charred remains of you MUGGBOOT. You have been warned !

Shadrak and da mandem have just finished shooting…a video in south London. I couldn’t make it down there but I’m told people had a good fucking time and no drinks or food was provided.
